Censorship of pornography contents and BIS data center are two of the seven-point demand to the RIM by related government ministry in Indonesia. Communication and Information Minister earlier give an ultimatum to RIM as it is considered buying too much time for fulfilling to them.
The government has at least two reasons of forcing Research In Motion (RIM) to install the data center in Indonesia. First, to facilitate the authorities to tap the information in the context of law enforcement. Second, save international Internet bandwidth .
The first reason, which focuses on saving enough bandwidth does not make enough sense because the new server location will only effect on the consumption of internet bandwidth if the traffic can also be diverted into the country. Since most sites accessed the site is outside the country such as facebook, yahoo, gmail, etc. So it will not have too significant impact.
The second reason that BIS data centers should be in Indonesia, is that it will be easier for authorities to do eavesdropping and search for information by law enforcement was not directly correlated unless the government had a policy that could force RIM to give full access to the data communication desired. It is like in the situation when the server is already in front of our eyes and within our grasp but if we don't have the username / password to access it we would not able to access the data that we desired. Strange if the government forcing RIM move servers to Indonesia just because want to make sniffing or eavesdropping. If indeed the final goal is requesting full access to the RIM for access to user data that had been protected by encryption, the government should not be selective and it should be for all, other communications service providers must also be asked, such as: Facebook, Yahoo, Gmail, and etc.
Government's demand for Research In Motion (RIM) to place data centers (Data Center) BlackBerry in Indonesia still have no certainty until now.
